Today the MBNA Board and a representative of the Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club met with the City park planners and consultants to discuss Phase 1 of the Meydenbauer Bay Park. We previewed the presentation to be given on Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 at City Hall.

Phase 1 is the area from 99th Ave. to the western boundary of the existing park, and it is the subject of several permit applications already filed by the City.  Overall, we are pleased that City planners are addressing a number of MBNA’s concerns:

–The floating concrete pedestrian pier will not extend south any further than the existing marina docks, will have accommodation for people-powered vessel launch, and will have railings, benches, and subdued lighting.

–Phase 1 will provide 109 parking spaces for park and marina users in the existing marina, in the existing park parking lot, on Lake Washington Blvd, on 99th Ave., and in spaces near the new visitor moorage.

–The relocated beach protects swimmers from boat traffic, and provides substantially improved changing and rest rooms, but the issue of stray currents from moored or passing boats is still being researched.

–The stream at the extreme western end of the park will be day-lighted only from the lake to Lake Washington Blvd.; it is recognized that the stream bed may be dry much of the year.

Permits are expected by Oct. 2016, with construction of the park in 2017.  Park operating hours, police monitoring, lighting after dark, the use of the historic Whaling Building at the foot of 99th Ave., and other operational issues are under active consideration.

Please plan to attend on Thursday for the full presentation and discussion.
